A large part of UTD’s success relies on the dedication and passion of its volunteers. Thank you so much for considering signing up as a volunteer. We look forward to sharing the journey with you.

Please read the role descriptions carefully as they will assist you in clearly understanding the requirements of each Volunteer role. UTD wants to ensure that you have a realistic picture of the various options so that you are rewarded with a positive Volunteering experience.

Volunteer options at UTD include

Registration Staff

  • Needed at Glencairn Farm on Thursday & Friday afternoon (25th & 26th April)

  • Route knowledge is advantageous

  • Start / Finish Line Staff

  • Shifts range from 3-6hrs

Aid Station Staff - South Africa

  • All positions located in South Africa

  • Shifts range from 6-9 hours

  • Most points are accessible by vehicle

  • Staff required Friday, Saturday & Sunday (26th, 27th & 28th April)

Aid Station Staff - Lesotho

  • All positions are located in Lesotho

  • Volunteers depart Glencairn Farm on Friday Morning (26th) in the Volunteer Shuttle. Self-drive is an option in a 4X4

  • Shifts range from 6 - 9 hours

  • Accommodation and meals will be provided before/after your volunteer duties

  • Weather appropriate clothing is essential. Sub-zero temps, high winds, rain and sleet/snow are not uncommon

  • A valid passport with a minimum of 6 months validity is required

Sweepers (Safety Marshalls)

  • Sweeps are the “last” people on the course and there to ensure the runners at the back make it to each check point

  • It can be an extremely rewarding experience and is a highly sought-after position

  • Sweeping is hard work, requires immense patience, a love for the mountains and the ability to spend long days in them

  • Self-sufficiency, initiative and problem-solving ability is critical

  • Previous mountain running/hiking experience is essential for all sweeps

  • Sweeping legs will range between 15km-30km in length

  • Familiarity with the use of GPS devices and maps is required (If you are not confident in this area PLEASE inform us, so we can place you with suitable team members)

  • Carrying an 8-12kg hiking pack and not a light running pack is required

  • Covering more distance than anticipated and spending more time in the mountains than expected is a frequent occurrence

  • Sweep teams will always have a minimum of 3 volunteers in them

  • Lesotho Sweep teams need a valid passport with a minimum of 6 months validity

  • Lesotho Sweep teams depart Sani Pass Hotel at 06h30 on Friday morning (28th April) in a Volunteer Shuttle

VOLUNTEER PACKAGE

Volunteers at UTD will receive the following as part of their Volunteer Package:

This package is based on a minimum commitment of 1 X 8 hour shift, or 2 X 3 - 6 hour shifts.

  • Accommodation in the Volunteer Tented Village at Glencairn Farm for the period that you are assisting with the event.

  • A volunteer UTD T-shirt

  • A 25% discount to a distance of your choice at the following year’s UTD. This cannot be transferred to another year or person.
